Three Karenga District Officials Arrested Over Corruption Allegations

In a major crackdown on corruption, three top officials in Karenga District have been arrested and detained at Karenga Central Police Station. The accused officials are Omello John Bosco, the District Commercial Officer, Alfred Lokyan, the Minister for Works, and Nasur Charles, the District Water Engineer.

The arrests were made following a monitoring exercise and meeting for service delivery in Karenga District headquarters, led by Maj Martha Asiimwe, Head of RDC Secretariat/Anti-Corruption Unit, Office of the President. Bamwine Fred, Commissioner in charge of RDCs in the Office of the President in charge of Karamoja region, also participated in the exercise.

According to sources, the three officials are facing charges of embezzlement of funds. The exact amount allegedly embezzled is yet to be confirmed, but sources indicate that it runs into millions of shillings.

Maj Asiimwe commended the security agencies for their efforts in fighting corruption. “We are committed to ensuring that those who engage in corrupt practices are brought to justice,” she said.

The people of Karenga District and the wider Karamoja region have welcomed the arrests, saying that it is a step in the right direction towards fighting corruption.

The three officials are expected to appear in court soon to face charges. The investigation into the allegations is ongoing, and more arrests may be made in the coming days.

In a related development, Maj Asiimwe and Bamwine Fred also held a meeting with district officials and local leaders in Karamoja sub region to discuss ways of improving service delivery in the district. The meeting focused on issues such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development.

The government has pledged to continue its efforts to fight corruption and ensure that public officials are held accountable for their actions.

The arrests are a major breakthrough in the fight against corruption in Uganda, and demonstrate the government’s commitment to tackling the vice.
