KAMPALA

The Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babirye Babalanda, has called on leaders, especially in Busoga region to put aside their differences and work together to improve the lives of the people, saying true leadership is measured by the legacy one leaves behind.

Babalanda made the remarks after attending the burial of former 2nd Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Moses Ali in Adjumani district. On Wednesday, thousands of mourners gathered at Takwa Muslim Cemetery in Abirichaku Village, Adjumani West County Constituency, Adjumani district to pay their last respects to the veteran politician and statesman who died at the age of 87 at Nakaseero hospital on July 18.

Speaking to this reporter, Babalanda said the large turnout at the burial reflected the impact Gen. Ali had on the country and urged leaders to emulate his commitment to public service.

“When you leave this world, people should remember you as a hero because of the service you rendered to them, not because of endless political wrangles,” she said.

She also warned against voter bribery and violence in the coming local council elections. She retaliated her earlier directive to Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) and Resident City Commissioners (RCCs) to ensure that the LC elections, which will begin tomorrow Thursday July  23, 2026, with women’s elections, are conducted in a peaceful, free and fair environment.

“I have asked RDCs and RCCs to remain vigilant and ensure there is no chaos during the elections. Anyone found bribing voters should be arrested and dealt with in accordance with the law,” she said.

Earlier today, the Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama said security agencies have been informed to closely monitor the electoral process to curb electoral offences, including voter bribery and violence.

The Government has repeatedly warned candidates and their supporters against engaging in acts that undermine the integrity of the electoral process, saying offenders will face the full force of the law.
