Today, Tuesday, December 31, 2024, the Government of Uganda is set to officially transfer the Electricity Distribution License from UMEME to the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL). This marks the end of UMEME’s 20-year tenure in power distribution and connections in Uganda.
Ruth Ssentamu Nankabirwa, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, together with officials from the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), will preside over the handover ceremony during a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre this morning.

The Government had earlier announced its decision not to extend the concessions for Eskom Uganda Limited and UMEME when they naturally expire in 2023 and 2025, respectively. Both companies had been operating under 20-year service contracts with the Government of Uganda.
UMEME, a private power distributor, is expected to wind up its operations by the end of March 2025. However, there is speculation that it may need to continue operations for a few months beyond the concession period to allow for government audits as part of its buyout process.
