Kampala International University Director of Academic Affairs (DAA), Dr. Benson Tukundane has asked the government to consider funding research projects in private universities in order to boost research and innovations in the country.
According to Dr. Tukundane, research studies by both public and private universities benefit the country as a whole calling upon government to equally facilitate research in private institutions as it is a case for public universities.
“Our appeal to government is that as they fund research, they should also consider funding private universities like KIU because these institutions and research studies by their students do not benefit the institutions but also Uganda as a whole,” said Dr. Tukundane.
He was speaking at the closure of the university International Research and Development Conference (IRDEC) at Kansanga Kampala yesterday, October 20.
Giving highlights of the conference, Dr. Joel Isabirye, the Head of Department Journalism and Media Studies at KIU said African governments should invest in science education to address her leadership and development challenges. This was according to a research paper presented by Prof. Wasswa Balunywa, Vice Chancellor MUBS who was a keynote speaker at the conference.
On the hand, the KIU Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, Dr. Janice D Busingye in her presentation called for investing in advanced science and technology and prioritizing Girl-Child education in Africa. Dr. Busingye believes that adapting to science and technology and supporting education for girls will partly solve some of the daily challenges which Africa is facing.
Publication of Student’s Research Papers
The DAA noted that the university is working on uploading online research papers submitted by students to make them accessible to the public.
“We have an institutional repository on the university website under library where students’ research papers are published, reviewed and accessed globally.” Dr. Tukundane said
He noted that the university has a team of professionals who supervised research projects to avoid plagiarizing of other author’s content as well as ensuring factual data checking.
