The government has launched the first phase of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Project, which will cover the development of 140 kilometers of roads across four districts and five municipalities within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
The program, aimed at enhancing infrastructure and services, will eventually cover 330 kilometers of roads in Kampala, Wakiso, Mpigi, and Mukono. It is being implemented by the Ministry of Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs with support from the World Bank.
Speaking at the launch of the first phase at Kira Municipal Grounds, Uganda’s Vice President Jesca Alupo, who represented President Yoweri Museveni, highlighted that the program will be critical in transforming the infrastructure of Kampala and its neighboring districts.
Alupo noted that the road network situation in Kampala is alarming, with only 14% of the roads paved and in good condition. She emphasized that the project will address key challenges in the city, including flooding, poor infrastructure, and traffic congestion.
The Vice President also stressed that the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area Urban Development Project will promote environmentally friendly infrastructure development.
State Minister for Kampala, Kabuye Kyofatogabye, appealed to property owners in areas where infrastructure work will be carried out to voluntarily give up portions of their land to facilitate the works, as there will be no compensation for land acquisition.
