A group of intern doctors has made a unique request to President Museveni, seeking patriotism and ideological orientation training to enhance their public service. The doctors, led by David Mugyema, believe that this training will help them develop a sense of national pride and belonging, enabling them to serve the public better.
In a Monday meeting with the Commissioner of the National Secretariat for Patriotsim Corps (NSPC), Hellen Seku, the doctors expressed their desire to learn leadership and governance skills. They acknowledged that medical work is not just about providing healthcare but also about serving the nation.
“We are a fresh team of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, dentists who completed a whole year going under supervision in different regional referral hospitals but we realised that medical work is a public service and we asked ourselves that which message are we carrying to Ugandans that we are going to serve apart from the knowledge we gathered in medical schools and at internship places,” said the medical interns. Honestly we don’t know how to relate with the public, and we also lack administration and governance skills yet the office of the President has that provision and we have seen different teams benefiting from ideological training and we believe we can as well benefit in the the program.”
This request comes after a previous group of 200 intern doctors underwent similar training at the National Leadership Institute (NALI) in Kyankwanzi. The doctors are eager to follow in their footsteps and demonstrate their commitment to their profession and the country.
“It will be a great honor that we come, learn and unlearn something but also we are doing this to walk in the agenda of our President and we want to show him that we are committed to our profession. We are done with school and mandatory training and we are remaining with only patriotism training which you started and handed it over to Commissioner Seku and we believe once we go through it,we would be fully polished and ready for service,” said Mugyema who led a group of intern doctors to NSPC office.
With 300 medical interns ready for the training, the doctors are waiting for the President’s consideration of their request. This initiative highlights the young professionals’ willingness to go beyond their medical knowledge and serve the nation with dedication and patriotism.
