Journalists have been urged to be vigilant and protect their personal data to prevent fraudsters and hackers from stealing their information or money.
This call has been made by Baker Birikujja, Director of the Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO), during a half-day journalists’ training on cyber security, data protection, and privacy at the Nakawa Innovation Hub.
The training, organized by PDPO and NITA-U, aimed at equipping journalists about awareness and the importance of safeguarding personal data. This is in line with NITA -U and PDPO initiative doubled “Beera ku Guard”.
Birikujja warned that fraudsters and hackers are increasingly targeting individuals’ sensitive information, emphasizing the need for citizens to take proactive measures to secure their data.
“It’s very important to use strong passwords, hence being cautious with online transactions, and avoiding sharing personal information on unsecured platforms as well as using open Wi-Fi to share information” Birikujja cautioned.
It’s should be noted that PDPO is working to enhance data protection and cybersecurity in Uganda and they have put an initiative doubled “Beera ku Guard” and this engagement with journalists aims to amplify awareness and promote a culture of data protection among citizens.
