Authorities in Katwe – Kabatoro sub- county Kasese district on Tuesday arrested about 10 parents for faulting to take their children back to school.
The parents were found in Kabirizi Parish Lake Katwe Sub-county, Kasese district were during an operation by local authorities to arrest both learners and parents that had not reported back to schools.
The Lake Katwe Sub-county L. C III Chairperson, Wilson Asiimwe said he decision to carry out this operation was reached after realizing that the turn-up was still very low in some schools in the area.
During the operation, many jchildren were found with their parents in garden farms harvesting cotton and maize while others were picked loitering in trading centres.
Jackson Niwagyira, the area chairperson Kabirizi village said that at Kabirizi Primary School, which is in his area of administration, only 126 pupils had turned up out of 245 total learners.
Despite the calls by government, school management and other stakeholders urging parents to take back their children to school, Wilson Baluku, the head teacher Kabirizi Primary School revealed that many parents are still withholding learners at homes noting that a few who have responded send learners late after engaging them in farm works.
The arrested parents were taken to Katwe police station but later released with caution.
