Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and ministry of energy have entered a joint partnership to promote sanitation and waste management in Kampala city.
In a partnership agreement signed at Hotel Africana in Kampala, the duo have launched a technical working group for sanitation, waste management and resource recovery.
The project is aimed at supporting urban areas to manage their waste and recover digestible material for biogas production and generation of electricity.
According to the partners, the project will facilitate the successful development and implementation of an Integrated Waste Management strategy in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
Over 2000 tones of solid waste is collected in Kampala per day but the collection efficiency is 56 percent. KCCA says about 1400 tones is disposed off.
Speaking at the launch of the campaign, the Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, said that solid waste management sector is not prioritized while making national appropriations.
He stated that it has been relegated to the private sector and donors.
He says the partnership will give a fertile ground for a sustainable management of solid waste through recycling.
