Kyambogo University has donated lifesaving marine jackets to two schools in Kabale district following several media reports of difficulties faced by learners to access schools.
A story of struggling school going children in Kabale with difficulties to better transport means to school after a senior Two student at Bunyonyi SS, Martin Izibayo, drowned in a lake last week and his body was never retrieved.
Following these reports, the university management at Kyambogo has come to the rescue of the learners at Bunyonyi SS and Bwana Primary School donating to them lifesaving jackets, scholastic materials such as pens exercise books mathematical sets among others.
Delivering the items at Bunyonyi Secondary school premises in Kitumba Sub County of Kabale District, the Kyambogo University Vice Chancellor, Eli Katunguka Rwakishaya, said that they decided to donate the items were delivered as part of the University’s corporate social responsibility.
The Bwama Primary School headteacher, Patience Tweheyo, said that they have also lost a teacher and a pupil, with both drowning in the lake
Kabale District Education Officer Moses Tumwijukye Bwengye, said that the district is saddened over the student’s death and implored the learners at these schools, to always avoid crossing the lake without lifesaving jackets. He commended Kyambogo university for the donation, saying the lifesaving jackets will help to fight against absenteeism and school dropout.
The Kabale District leaders, who include the District Vice Chairperson, Miria Akankwasa Tugume, and the Principal Assistant Secretary, Gordon Manzi commended Kyambogo for the gesture, which they said complements district’s efforts of giving quality and affordable education.
