MITOOMA

Woman MP aspirant Rebecca Kyarampe Namanya has pledged unwavering loyalty to the people of Mitooma District, vowing never to betray their trust if elected in the upcoming National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries.

Kyarampe made the remarks on Tuesday while campaigning in Mayanga Sub-county, Ruhinda South County, amid a charged political atmosphere marked by religious divisions and personal attacks.

“They say don’t vote for Rebecca because she is poor and a commoner. But I want to tell you, I am with you and I will remain with you. I will neither leave nor betray you. I will work for my people,” Kyarampe told a crowd of supporters.

She rallied voters to disregard critics who mock her financial status, urging them to turn up in large numbers on polling day and secure victory for what she termed “the people’s candidate.” She also assured the electorate that their votes would be protected and the electoral process would not be rigged.

The Mitooma political scene has recently been marred by allegations of religious bias, vote buying, and inflammatory rhetoric. Some religious leaders are reported to be openly endorsing candidates, sparking concerns over sectarianism. There are claims that the Catholic Church in Ruhinda South is backing incumbent MP Dononzio Kahonda, a fellow Catholic.

Amid these tensions, Kyarampe positioned herself as a unifying figure, calling for an end to divisive politics.

“Let’s rise above our religious differences and vote for leaders who will serve all people, not just a few. Mitooma needs unity if we are to move forward,” she said.

Adding to the political heat, former district NRM chairperson Wilberforce Byaboneka recently urged voters to vote out underperforming MPs, singling out Kahonda, who has served for a decade.

The race for the NRM flag bearer in the Woman MP slot has attracted several candidates, including the incumbent Juliet Agasha Bashiisha, Faith Kyohairwe, and Dr. Rosebell Twinomujuni. However, the contest has largely narrowed to a two-way race between Kyarampe and Bashiisha.

The NRM primaries are scheduled for July 17, with voters expected to line up behind their preferred candidates in a public display of support.
