Makerere university council in the emergency meeting held on 15th July has resolved to conduct the 88th guild elections virtually and banned all the physical electoral activities in the university.
This follows the dangerous incident that happened during the guild campaigns on Thursday night that led to the death of one student from Uganda Christian university.
According to the letter from the office of the university secretary signed by Lorna Magara the chairperson of the council and Yusuf Kiranda the secretary’ of the council , indicates that the university council has terminated the electoral process of 88th students guild leadership and also has suspended all activities of senior common room, including the caretaker government and all the guild leadership structures.
Furthermore, the council resolved to appoint a select committee chaired by Assoc. Prof Helen Nambalirwa Nkabala to review the students guild constitution, the impact of external influence in the students activities, the role of the police in providing security in students activities at the university among others.
The select committee has been tasked to provide an interim report from the date of appointment to the university council.
