Following the death of Batungura Bewatte, a UCU law student which occured on Thursday evening during the final 88th Makerere Guild campaigns, number Ugandans on Twitter have gone ahead to air out their opinions calling out Makerere students over their violent actions.
“Makerere university is now a den of hooligans.” Says Survivor UG
“Politics shouldn’t be the reason you go to kill someone, better yet there is no reason for taking one’s life. Makerere this is horrible” says Unemployed Youth
Another user, Jonah Kirabo tweeted, “Young people ought to say no to violence. Peace is more important the who wins the election”
Also popular local journalist, Samson Kasumba Mulun said in a tweet; “The day I saw university students in Makerere breaking tree branches and throwing stones. I knew we had a problem to deal with”
It should be noted that this kind of incident is not the first of its kind at the university. On several occassions the students have gone violent in campaigns, demonstrations over various issues which has left many injured, arrested and also destruction of the university property.
A parents who preferred anonymity says that she is always worried about her son at the university because of the unending chaos that’s always at the university.
“I am always calling to check on my son since he is just a first-year student and has not yet got used to the university environment,” said anonymous parent
The university officials on the other hand have also come up with a few resolutions towards this issue during an urgent meeting and one of these is to hold all the future elections online. There’s hope that this will help reduce or even eliminate these violent behaviors among students.
