The State Minister for Economic Monitoring, Beatrice Akello has directed the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to investigate the Sironko District Engineering Department over shoddy works.
During her road inspection on Wednesday, the minister discovered that six roads which were budgeted for in the last financial year (2023/24) were never worked on despite the government allocating Shs1 billion for their construction.
Minister Akelli is in the Bugisu and Bukedi sub-regions for monitoring exercise to assess the performance of various government-funded programs. She decried the poor state of roads and in the regions and revealed that some of them have been abandoned.
“The work progress is very slow. Government released the funds Shs1 billion for the construction of the roads but, only 50% of the money has been absorbed by the district engineer, and most of the works have not yet been completed,” she said.
Andrew Wasukira, the Sironko district engineer explained that he has delayed to work on the roads due to the heavy rains that has been in the district for over one year. However, the minister refuted the allegations ordering immediate investigation into the matter and other incomplete projects.
Sironko District Chairperson, David Giruuli expressed optimism that the Minister’s visit would expedite the completion of the unfinished road projects.
Dennis Ephraim Balwanireghe RDC Sironko blamed the civil servants for the shoddy in the district arguing that government sends a lot of money in the district but of the projects especially roads are impassable which he blamed on the district engineering department
The councillor of Nalusla sub county, Herbert Musika revealed that most of the roads are in the sorry state and even most of the projects that government has put it money has been put to waste and most of the civil servants have no will to work.
