The government of Uganda is committed to extend food relief to persons in the districts which were affected by different natural calamities, the government Chief Whip Thomas Tayebwa has said.
According to Thomas Tayebwa, the relief is in line with the government’s policy on disaster response in the country.
The increased heavy rains have caused floods, landslides in different parts of the country destroying thousand of crops, homes, schools and churches. This has prompted government to run to the rescue of the victims in major affected areas.
Parrots UG has learned that the districts to benefit from this relief include Mitooma, Bududa among others.
Although the disaster destroyed many properties, the government Whip says that government resolved to first give food relief to the victims whose crops were destroyed as they plan to respond to other victims.
Last Month, Parrots UG published a story of the rainstorms which destroyed a number of properties including crop plantations, houses, a church in Nkinga Ruhinda county Mitooma District.
In response to the disaster, the area Woman MP, Hon. Juliet Agasha Bashiisha raised the concern on the floor of parliament during a parliamentary sitting on October 5th, 2021, seeking for urgent government actions.
The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, on 11th October, wrote to the minister of Disaster relief preparedness and Refugee in the Office of the Prime Minister directing the ministry to address the issue.
It has since been understood that Mitooma was considered among the districts to benefit from the government food relief in response to the recent calamities affecting several parts of the country.
The amount of money that will be spent on the procurement of the food items to be distributed to the victims and the disbursement dates have by the time of compiling this report not been disclosed.
