The Mitooma District Woman member of parliament, Hon. Juliet Agasha Bashiisha has asked African governments to prioritize youth participation in agriculture to improve sustainable food security on the continent.
“We have another challenge of the youth who are being exported as cheap labour to other countries outside Africa where they’re treated as slaves and sometimes die from there. As Africa, we need to sensitize and engage mainly our youth into agriculture because few years to come we shall not have energetic people to work on our farms,” MP Agasha proposed
The legislator made the remarks yesterday (Friday 7th July,2023) in Rabat Morocco where she is representing Uganda at the African Parliamentary Corporations conference on food security.

In her presentation, MP Agasha was concerned about the unfair education curriculum used in many African countries which does not emphasize the teaching of agriculture subject in schools. She says that failure to strengthen the syllabus in schools has made learners to consider agriculture as a dirty job and sector for the less educated people something that has caused global food insecurities.
The two days African parliamentary cooperation conference is in the context of current challenges organized by the House of Representatives of the Kingdom of Morocco. The conference commenced on July 6 and was closed on Friday 7th July 2023.
