Police in Sheema district are holding a woman and her daughter after the body of a man who had been missing for about three weeks was discovered buried in a potato garden.
The deceased, identified as Saverio Bakanyita, was found on August 10 in Kashanjure village, Kigarama sub-county, after residents became suspicious when dogs attempted to exhume something from the ground.
Bakanyita’s body was reportedly tied with ropes and wrapped in a blanket before it was buried.
Bakanyita’s son, Emmanuel Tukaheebwa, told police that his father had previously been a victim of domestic violence and had been assaulted by members of the family.
He said his father was taken to Muzira Health Centre III after the assault, where health workers contacted him after allegedly finding the patient abandoned.
“The health workers called me saying he was abandoned at the health facility and I went there to give him care,” Tukaheebwa said.
He said Bakanyita was discharged after three days and that he took him home before returning to work.
“After a few days, I was told that my Dad had gone missing,” he added.
Police subsequently arrested Bakanyita’s wife, Adriane Kesubi, and their daughter, only identified as Sanyu, to assist with investigations.
Sheema OC-CID Afisa Ninkunda said the two were arrested to help police establish the circumstances surrounding Bakanyita’s death.
“The duo has been arrested to help police in the investigation and establish circumstances surrounding Bakanyita’s death,” Ninkunda said.
John Tukamuahaba, the Nyashabeya LC1 chairperson, said the deceased family has had longstanding disagreements.
Residents reportedly linked the death to longstanding domestic disagreements within the family.
The deceased son, Tukaheebwa is exposed today. Tukamuahaba reported to have built separate houses for his parents at their home in an attempt to resolve the disagreements, but the efforts allegedly did not end the conflict.
Ninkunda said investigations into the matter were ongoing.
Police condemned domestic violence and urged members of the public to seek help from relevant authorities whenever disputes arise instead of resorting to violence.
