The Electoral Commission returning officer for Soroti city, Christine Eyu has on Thursday evening declared Herbert Edmund Ariko of the ruling NRM, the overall winner in Soroti East county parliamentary by election.
Ariko garnered 9,407 votes of the total 18,606 votes cast against FDC’s Attan Moses Okia who gathered 8,771 votes.
The UPC candidate Amuriat Pascal, became third with only 115 votes.

According to Eyuku, the total Valid ballots: were 18,293 while the total counted ballots were 18,606. Invalid votes were 313 whereas 107 were spoilt ballots.
The Soroti East county by election has been marred with massive arrest of some opposition leaders, polling agents in the area. Last night, police arrested over 420 FDC leaders and supporters of Attan alleging them of holding unlawful campaign past the recommended hours.
By publication time, neither the FDC political camp nor the UPC had conceded defeat.
