A team of legal officers from the  opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) have appealed to police investigating the death of a UCU student killed at Makerere university to retrieve the CCTV footage to that was captured at the crime scene to help in identifying the prime suspects.

The lawyers led by Benjamin Katana requested for the footages of the events that led to the death Betungura Bewatte during Makerere University guild election campaigns last week. However, police asked the lawyers to give them more time to complete investigations.

This followed the arrest of three NIP supporters including party MP Frank Kabuye (MP Kassanda South County) on allegations of participating in the violence that led to the death of Betungura.

Betungura was fatally stabbed to death during the Makerere guild presidential campaigns by unknown persons who stabbed him on the right side of the necks using a broken glass bottle according to police. This was during a scuffle between two political supporters of the FDCand NUP as each group blocked one another from using the university Rugby grounds for campaigns.

Three suspects; Hon.Frank Kabuye, Ssekidde Allan and Muzafaru Kaburwa, all members of NUP were arrested to help police in investigations. The arrested were allegedly part of the NUP group involved in the violence. This has prompted the party lawyers to demand for  CCTV camera footage retrieval to identify the suspect.

However, the police spokesperson Fred Enanga says that the joint task force and detectives from ISO, CID and Kampala Metropolitan Police are still investigating this murder.

Enanga said during the security press briefing at police headquarters in Naguru on Monday that with the help of CCTV footages, police has been able to identify more than 12 external perpetrators that were involved in violence

“The use of CCTV footages and on the account of witnesses has enabled us to get a list of perpetrators in the violence,” he said

He added that police is also using the CCTV footages to examine the influence of violence caused by the students brigades that were being used to guard candidates.

“The death of this student was so devastating and painful to the family, friends and universities. We should have empathy care and love for one another.” Enanga eulogized expressing police commitment to end toxic culture of violence in institutions of learning.

Enanga furtherndisclosed that the three suspects are expected to be arraigned to court today.
