RUBIRIZI
The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has assessed water supply infrastructure in Rubirizi District to identify interventions needed to improve service delivery and optimise existing treatment facilities.
The technical team, led by NWSC senior manager for water quality, Dr Babu, inspected facilities in the area as part of efforts to strengthen water supply and improve the performance of existing infrastructure.
The assessment focused on three key areas: completion of the Kabaseke Water Supply Project, optimisation of the Kakindo Water Treatment Plant (WTP), and the operational performance of the Bururuma Water Treatment Plant.
At Kakindo, the team inspected the 200 cubic metre water treatment plant and the 120 cubic metre Kabaseke Reservoir before proceeding to the Kabaseke Booster Station.
The booster station is being developed to pump treated water from Kakindo WTP and includes a 60 cubic metre sump and pump house, as well as the 120 cubic metre Katanda Reservoir.
However, the assessment found that several components are still required to complete the project.
These include connection to the power grid, electrical and mechanical installations, pumping equipment, and construction of pumping and return mains.
Once completed, the Kabaseke project is expected to improve water supply in Katerera Branch.
The team also reviewed treatment processes at Kakindo WTP to identify ways of improving efficiency and maximising the use of available infrastructure.
At Bururuma WTP, the team assessed production and treatment performance and identified interventions required to improve its operations.
The plant has a production capacity of about 1,000 cubic metres of water per day and draws raw water from Lake Rutoto.
The assessment is part of NWSC’s ongoing interventions aimed at improving water supply infrastructure and expanding access to safe and clean water across the country.
