KAMPALA
The Parliament of Uganda has officially set March 26th as the date for swearing in the Member of Parliament-elect for Kawempe North.
Speaker Annette Anita Among confirmed this development through her X handle, stating, “I have received official communication from the Electoral Commission along with a copy of the gazetted results. I will proceed to swear in the Member of Parliament-elect for Kawempe North in my chambers tomorrow at 12:00 noon.” She extended her congratulations to Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi on his victory.
The Electoral Commission finalized the gazetting of the Kawempe North by-election results on March 25th. However, discrepancies were noted in the figures compared to earlier announcements by the EC. The National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Faridah Nambi, saw her vote count revised from 8,593 to 9,058, while the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi, experienced an increase from 17,939 to 18,014 votes.
These adjustments have sparked discussions among political observers, with some questioning the accuracy of the initial tally. Despite this, the Electoral Commission has maintained its stance, declaring Nalukoola Luyimbazi as the winner of the Kawempe North parliamentary seat.
This by-election has been closely watched, as it reflects the shifting dynamics within Uganda’s political landscape. Nalukoola’s victory is seen as a significant achievement for the NUP, further solidifying its presence in Kampala. Meanwhile, the NRM faces challenges in regaining ground in urban constituencies.
As the swearing-in ceremony approaches, all eyes will be on Parliament to witness the formalization of Nalukoola’s role as the Kawempe North MP. This event marks the culmination of a contentious electoral process and sets the stage for the next chapter in Kawempe North’s representation.
