The police in Rukungiri District Kigezi region in Southwestern Uganda is holding five suspects and supporters of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) for allegedly staging a demonstration against the under house arrest of former Party leader Dr Kizza Besigye.
The youth clad in FDC customised wears, casual wears earlier this morning camped in Rukungiri town in Rukungiri municipality carrying placards with messages expressing grievances to government on what they termed as illegal arrest of Dr Kizza Besigye.
Rukungiri being the home of Dr. Kizza Besigye, the youths argued that Doctor’s people who rely on him for support have been made vulnerable as he can no longer takecare of them.
They demand that the Inspector General of Police Martin Okoth Ochola remove his “boys” from the residence of Dr Kizza Besigye and set him free.
It should be recalled that on Thursday last week Dr Besigye was arrested by anti riot police which intercepted him in the areas of Kasangati in attempts to mobilize masses to join him in a walking to walk to protest exorbitant fuel and commodity prices in Uganda.
Besigye has since been put under house arrest despite several calls by Human Rights Activists, general public.
SP Musa Tibakirana the Rukungiri District Police Commander admitted to having arrested the suspects but he did not disclose their identities for security reasons.
”We have five (5) suspects in our custody for holding unlawful demonstrations abd disrupting people’s peace. They will be habdled according to the laws. As police, we’re ready to deal with anyone attempting to cause havoc in this town.” Tibakirana said.
He said police is heavily deployed and ready to combat any strikes in the area advising residents to stay calm.
