Police in Mbarara have identified the body of a teenager that was discovered in River Rwizi. The deceased has been identified as Elvis Magambo, 19, a senior five student at Ntare school in Mbarara city.
His body was retrieved from River Rwizi on July 10, 2025. His death has sparked deep sorrow and urgent conversations about youth welfare and safety near water bodies.
It is reported that on July 2, 2025, Elvis was reported missing at Koranorya Police Station after allegedly being expelled from school and was later found floating on River Rwizi in the wee hours of 10th July, 2025. On 11th police identified the body and launched investigations.
Rwizi Region Police spokesperson SP Samson Kasasira noted that investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding Elvis’s death, including whether it was accidental or involved foul play. Authorities are urging the public to remain patient and avoid speculation.
As of this report, Ntare School has not released a formal statement regarding the events that led to Elvis’s expulsion and subsequent disappearance. His father, Dr. Magambo Emmanuel, a dental surgeon at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, is mourning the devastating loss of his son.
This incident is the latest in a series of tragedies along River Rwizi, which has become notorious for drownings over the years. Local leaders and residents are calling for enhanced safety measures such as fencing, signage, and educational campaigns to prevent further loss of life.
