Over the years many Ugandans without access to personal cars and enough money to board public transport means head to their rural homes for Christmas using special hires such as commuter Taxis, coaster buses belonging to schools and institutions, agencies and other organizations.
This however, come with violation of traffic and road safety regulations as the hired motor vehicles do not meet the PSV standards.
This has been the case with this year’s Christmas celebrations as hundreds of thousand Ugandans stood in long ques in several Bus parks while others traveled in hired vehicles.
In avid to ensure safety of passengers and reduce on possible cases of accidents on the roads, the directorate of traffic and road safety intensified operations to crackdown illegal drivers and vehicles carrying passengers without PSV licenses.
Micheal Kananura, the traffic spokesperson says at least 2 school buses, 10 coasters and some drivers have been arrested in an operation.
“In line with the above, the Directorate has intensified its operations on the same. At least 10 drones, 10 school costas and 2 school buses have been impounded & drivers have been arrested,” said Kananura.
Among the schools whose buses and coasters have been impounded and stationed at different police stations include Landmark Junior School – Zzana along Entebbe road, and Bupadhengo Primary School in Kamuli district among others.
According to him, this is being done to stop reckless driving in a bid to secure the festive seasons. He warned drivers of vehicles without PSV licenses to stop doing so with immediate effect.
“Directorate of Traffic & Road Safety warns all motor vehicles carrying passengers, without PSV licences to stop with immediate effect,” Kananura warned
