The Police in Kampala-uganda through Racheal Kawala,the spokesperson have confirmed the recovery of a firearm at Tausi Bus Terminal, Bukesa Parish, in Kampala Central Division.
”Police at Old Kampala have recovered a firearm at Tausi Bus Terminal, Bukesa Parish, in Kampala Central Division” the statement reads.
According to the statement,the firearm was discovered by a conductor who on 14th April 2026 at about 0500 hours, while loading passengers onto a bus bound for Mbarara,was approached by an unknown passenger who requested to have his luggage transported but declined to open the bag for inspection by the conductor as part of routine checks which raised suspicion, prompting the conductor to physically check the luggage .It has been reported that in doing so, he detected an object resembling a firearm and immediately alerted authorities who swiftly responded to the scene and upon Inspection,an AK-47 riffle which had been concealed in a white polythene bag, which was further packed inside a “Ghana Must Go” (locally known as “usofia”) bag with an empty magazine were discovered.
Kawala has confirmed that no ammunition was recovered,the suspect fled the scene and remains at large as investigations and efforts to identify and apprehend him continue.
According to the Annual police crime report of 2025,Uganda Police in collaboration with the Defense intelligence and security (DIS), conducted a joint operation following a wave of aggravated robberies within the Greater Kampala metro politan area and discovered three (03) firearms and associated ammunition components which were subjected to forensic examination. It was also discovered that the recovered three firearms were linked to 88 aggrevated robberies and murder incidents.
According to the Directorate of forensic services, firearm crime linkages increased by 41% from 62 to 88 cases .
