The Kyegegwa Resident District Commissioner, Monica Karungi Kanyaihe has suspended night gatherings across the district on security reasons.
The decision was reached at in the District Security Committee meeting which RDC Karungi chaired.
In a notice issued on July 7, 2023 copied to the district LC5 chairperson, CAO, DPC, DISO, RPC Rwenzori East and RISO Rwenzori West, the RDC directed the closure of night gatherings from between 7:00pm and 6:00am.
Among the banned gatherings are entertainment centres, i.e bars, “bivulu”, illegal and legal video halls, churches and mosques gatherings i.e night prayers, all political and cultural rallies held at night, and any other undocumented gatherings.
The suspension allegedly stems from the current state security threats in the Rwenzori mountains following the recent Kasese School attack by the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels.
On June 16, at night hours, ADF raged a tragic attack on Lhubiriha SS in Ngando cell, Mpondwe Bwera, Kasese district and killed over 40 people majority students and kidnapped six students. The incident has caused insecurities not only in Kasese but also in other districts in the whole of the Rwenzori region.
Authorities in neighbouring Tooro and Ankole districts have also been prompted to enforce security measures against any possible attacks. In Mitooma District, which neighbours Kasese along the border of Queen Elizabeth National Park, RDC Francis Kibuuka Amooti reportedly suspended boarding section in all schools in sub-counties which near the park.
Attempts to speak to RDC Karungi were futile but Parrots Media learned that security agencies in Kyegegwa have been directed to arrest anyone not following the issued directives
