The ministry of education and sports in Uganda has asked schools and higher education institutions to close down for a period of 10 days to allow smooth National Housing and Population Census exercise.
In a letter dated November 8, 2023 to all school Headteachers, Principals and university Vice Chancellors, the ministry’s director for higher, technical, vocational education and training, Dr. Jane Egau Okou directed all heads of schools to close down between 9th-20th May, 2024 to allow learners to participate in the Population Census exercise.
“According to the approved roadmap, the census night will be from 9 to 10, and field enumeration will take place from May 10 to 20. During this exercise, all learners at all education levels will be expected to be at home on the census night and the enumeration period,” Egau said copied to the education minister, Janet K Museveni and Executive Director of National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) Prof. Mary Okwakol.
According to the ministry, the exercise will help to generate information which is essential in planning and implementation government policies, mass enrollment for electoral roadmap by the electoral commission, NIRA and in monitoring and evaluation of government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) among others.
The notice is according to insiders yet to be issued to respective recipients while some like Makerere University, Kyambogo University have acknowledged receipt of the notice.
