Police in Sheema District are holding a 34-year-old man accused of hacking his wife to death following a domestic dispute.
The suspect, identified as Innocent Muhabwe, allegedly killed his wife, Edrida Tuhaisomwe, 45, on the night of June 2, 2026, at the couple’s home in Katojo Central Village, Katojo Parish, Masheruka Sub-county, Sheema district.
According to the Greater Bushenyi regional police spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, the fatal attack stemmed from a domestic disagreement.
Earlier that day, the deceased had reportedly lodged a complaint against her husband, accusing him of failing to provide basic necessities for their children.
Police said Muhabwe had been summoned to appear before officers on June 3 regarding the complaint. However, upon learning of the summons, he allegedly became violent, threatened local leaders and destroyed a banana plantation belonging to the area chairperson.
“It is alleged that later that night, before Police could be updated about the new offences he had allegedly committed, the suspect armed himself with an axe and fatally attacked his wife at their home,” Tayebwa said.
The incident was reported to Police on June 3.
Police officers visited and documented the scene, recovered the suspected murder weapon and conveyed the body to Kabwohe Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination.
Muhabwe was subsequently arrested and remains in Police custody as investigations continue.
Police condemned all forms of domestic violence and urged the public to seek peaceful and lawful means of resolving family disputes.
The incident comes amid growing concern over domestic violence-related killings in the country.
According to the Police Annual Crime Report 2025, a total of 208 domestic violence-related murders were registered in 2025, up from 183 cases recorded in 2024, representing a 13.7% increase.
This was recorded despite an overall decline in reported domestic violence cases. Police statistics show that 12,361 domestic violence cases were registered in 2025, compared to 14,073 cases in 2024, reflecting a 12.2% decrease.
Police said investigations into the latest incident are ongoing and pledged to provide updates as more details emerge.
