At least six people have died and seven others sustained critical injuries following a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a truck along the Kiboga–Hoima highway in Kyankwanzi District.
The accident occurred at about 4am on Sunday at Kyakabuga village in Kyankwanzi District when a bus, registration number UBQ 595G, travelling from Kampala to Hoima, collided with a Fuso Fighter truck, registration number UBF 541C, that was heading in the opposite direction from Hoima carrying charcoal.
The impact triggered a fire that engulfed and completely burnt the two vehicles.
According to Wamala Region Police spokesperson, SSP Lameck Kigozi, six people died on the spot. Two of the deceased were travelling in the bus while four were occupants of the truck.
Kigozi identified the deceased as Gerald Muhumuza, 40, the driver of the bus and a resident of Hoima West Division, and Linongola Matsukizo, 47, a businesswoman of Congolese nationality. Other four victims, all passengers on the truck, had not yet been identified by press time.
Kigozi explained that seven survivors sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Kikonda Health Centre III for medical attention.
“Rescue teams from Kyankwanzi and Hoima districts responded to the scene, with firefighters from Hoima helping to extinguish the blaze,” he said
Bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending postmortem examinations.
