Police in Soroti City has arrested six leaders of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) over unlawful assembly.
The group led by party president Patrick Oboi Amuriat, Hon. Ebwalu Jonathan, and Hon. Alobo Joan were according to police holding a protest on Soroti main Street, causing traffic congestion.
Earlier this day, the party reported that their party president and other leaders were arrested and whisked to unknown detention
“FDC President Eng. Patrick Oboi Amuriat and MPs from Teso, including Hon. Alobo Joan, Hon. Jonathan Ebwalu, and other Party leaders, have been arrested and whisked away from Soroti City. Their whereabouts and the reasons for their arrest remain unknown,” FDC posted on their social media platforms.
Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said all the suspects have been arrested and charged with unlawful assembly, public nuisance, and assault.
“It turned violent when the crowd assaulted police officers, prompting a police response to disperse them,” ACP Rusoke said.
The arrested persons are currently detained at Soroti City East Division.
