KISORO
The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially named Mukankwaya Sultana Salim as its flag bearer in the upcoming Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament by-election.
The announcement comes as political parties across Uganda gear up for the by-election, set to fill the seat left vacant due to the death of former Woman MP, Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi on September 7.
Salim, a prominent activist was formally announced by the party during a press briefing in Kampala on Monday.
“Behold the #NationalUnityPlatform flag-bearer for Kisoro District Woman MP, comrade Sultana Salim (Tana)!
#PeoplePowerOurPower,” NUP President, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine said.
Speaking to journalists shortly after her unveiling, Sultana criticized the current government for failing to deliver on its promises to the people of Kisoro which she says has kept many in grinding poverty.
“There are a lot of things you have been promised, the Jua Kali Institute of Science and Technology, as we speak, they laid a stone in 2017 but you can no longer trace where that stone is,” said Sultana.
“Please, the people of Kisoro I urge you to change ans this is the time to change.”
Pointing out the impunity and alleged voter bribery during the recently concluded NRM primaries in Kisoro, Sultana appealed to the electoral commission to organize a free and fair election.
Sultana will face off NRM’s Rose Kabagyenyi, and Grace Akifeza Ngabirano (Independent). Other parties especially FDC are yet to nominate their candidate.
