A suspected thief was on Monday killed by an angry mob in Otuke district, Police investigation are ongoing.
Police identified the deceased as Tom Ongom, 28, a resident of Pama village, Amingpenyo parish in Alango Sub-County, Otuke District. He was allegedly caught by residents in Anara village Aloi Sub-County in Alebtong District after being accused of stealing a bull belonging to one Apili Josephine of Pama village.
According to authorities, the incident occurred on April 7, 2025, around 11:00 AM, starting in Anara village. It is reported that the stolen animal had been sold in Anara village.
Upon his arrest by local residents, Ongom was forcefully taken back to Pama village while being beaten. When they arrived, more villagers joined in the assault. Despite the timely response from the area police, Ongom succumbed to the injuries shortly after being rescued.
“A case of murder by mob has been registered, and investigations are ongoing,” said PJ Okema, the North Kyoga Police spokesperson.
Okema said that a medical officer was contacted to conduct a postmortem examination.
Authorities are currently searching for the owner of the stolen bull to assist in the ongoing inquiry. Meanwhile, Otuke Police are working closely with their counterparts in Alebtong District to identify and apprehend those responsible for the fatal beating.
The public has been cautioned against taking the law into their own hands, emphasizing that such acts are criminal and punishable by law.
