ROME
Vatican City, February 21, 2025 – The Vatican has dismissed reports that preparations for Pope Francis’ funeral are underway, following concerns over his health. The Swiss Guard, responsible for the Pope’s security, has refuted claims that they are rehearsing funeral protocols, emphasizing that their focus remains on his recovery.
Pope Francis, 88, has been hospitalized since February 14 at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after developing double pneumonia. While early reports raised concerns about his condition, Vatican sources state that the Pontiff is showing signs of improvement, remains alert, and has been able to engage in some work activities.
Swiss Guard Refutes Funeral Rehearsal Reports
In response to growing speculation, Swiss Guard spokesperson Eliah Cinotti clarified that no funeral rehearsals are taking place. “There is no particular alarm within the Swiss Guard. We are continuing our duties as usual and praying for the Holy Father’s speedy recovery,” Cinotti stated.
The reports originated from anonymous sources suggesting that Vatican officials were discreetly making arrangements for a possible papal transition. However, Vatican representatives have denied these claims, calling them “unfounded rumors.”
The Vatican Press Office confirmed that Pope Francis has been responding well to treatment. “His condition is stable, with slight improvements. He has been able to sit up, speak with visitors, and even joke with staff,” a statement read. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who visited him recently, described the Pontiff as “alert and in good spirits.”
Despite the Pope’s hospitalization, Vatican officials have assured the public that routine governance continues, and no emergency measures are in place. The Holy See has urged the faithful to rely on official statements rather than unverified reports circulating on social media.
As Pope Francis continues his recovery, Catholic leaders worldwide have called for prayers for his health. “The Holy Father has always been a man of resilience and faith. We trust in God’s grace for his healing,” said Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Vatican Secretary of State.
For now, Vatican sources reiterate that there is no cause for alarm, dismissing speculation of funeral preparations as premature and inaccurate. The Pope remains under medical supervision, with doctors monitoring his progress closely.
