Three Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) staff have been arrested and charged with bribery in the Anti-corruption Court.
The trio was arrested last week while trying to solicit a bribe from employees of Huai – Hui , an international company which has a factory in Kapeeka Luwero and specialises in the manufacturing of sanitary wear products.
SCP Fred Enanga, the police Spokesperson says CID Kampala had obtained several complaints from the investors, proprietors of businesses that they were suffering at hands of some UNBS officials who were demanding for bribes to have samples that were submitted by factories to the UNBS laboratory to be processed in time and even accompanied with very good reports.
Enanga noted that their task teams from crime intelligence linked up with employees of Huai – Hui who had submitted samples for wash down water closets and wash basins way back on 12th June.
The suspects were allegedly demanding Shs 2M to release a favorable report and because of these many complaints, the police decided to set up a trap and at one of the hotels and restaurants in Bweyogerere, a one called Sanyu John came and was given the money in cash and they managed to arrest him with the bribe .
He revealed that the bribe was solicited by other technical analysts from the UNBS laboratory who included Bawabya Elias and Okenyi David whom police also went and arrested.
According to police, the suspects were supposed to distribute the money among themselves as follows; Sanyu John 500,000/=, Bawabya Elias 500,000/=, and Okenyi David Ugx 1M
Police managed to process and produce all the three to the Anti – corruption court and were remanded last week.
Enanga said assured the public that police will investigate bribery and corruption related acts and will respond robustly wherever they’ll receive reports. He warned that bribery is unacceptable and affects the ability ministries, departments and agencies in government to deliver on their responsibilities.
