Traffic police records 10378 road accidents in one Month.

The  traffic directorate under the Uganda police has recorded 10378 road accidents in the month of October 2022.

This was revealed by the traffic Police Spokesperson Farida  Nampima  during their weekly press briefing at their headquarters in   Nagulu

“227 accidents were fatal, 705 accidents were serious ones while 446 accidents were minor  from 1st October to 29th October 2022. Out of 10232 crashes victims 250 died while 955 sustained injuries” Nampima  said

 

she noted that the highest contributors of these crashes include motorcycle riders, trucks and passenger service vehicles among others.

Nampima added that   a total number of 3386 offenders where offered with eps tickets on the road 6358 people were arrested for reckless driving,7278 arrested for driving cars which are not in proper mechanical condition,3333 had no valid driving permits , 3565 were arrested for not having  insurance, 20157 for not wearing seat belts  572 arrested for driving while using their mobile gadgets and 2003 were arrested for riding without helmets.

“ The major cause of road  crushes are careless driving, this means in regard driving without proper caution such as over-speeding ie driving beyond the speed limit, failure to use signals, disobeying traffic signs  drifting from one lane to another, using hand held Mobile phones while driving on the road, driving under the influence of drink or drug which is contrary to traffic act, failing to stop for pedestrians at designated crossing points among others” Nampima  said

She however said that police has always been clear on the traffic tips  while on the road which can help to stop the rampant accidents on the road.
Never cross the road behind packed vehicles, never drive while you are tired, all pedestrians should cross the road on safe designated  points either at zebra crossing or where traffic lights are and also use of fly overs ,  respect for road signs, always wear helmets while using a motorcycle either the passenger or rider and always use a seat belt while driving which enables you  to stay in one position.
