The Rwizi Region in Mbarara City, Southern Division are intensifying efforts to recover the body of Nuwamanya Yokana, a student at Ankole Institute, who drowned in River Rwizi on 30th November,2024.
ASP Kasasira Samson, the police spokesperson for the Rwizi region confirmed the incident, stating: “The tragedy occurred at around 4:00 PM when Nuwamanya and his colleagues decided to swim in the river after visiting Kirehe Trading Centre for a game of pool earlier in the afternoon.”
According to Kasasira, “Upon reaching the river, Nuwamanya quickly removed his clothes and entered the water, but unfortunately drowned. Alarmed by the incident, his friends rushed back to the institute to notify the administration, which then reported the matter to Ruti Police Station for further action.”
As of 2nd December 2024, the body of the deceased had not been recovered but efforts to retrieve it are ongoing, Kasasira added.
