Two Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers have been confirmed dead after a container truck crashed into a stationary car they were seated in at Corner Junction along Malaba-Jinja highway.
The accident occured on Saturday January 29, at around 3:30am along Mbale-Jinja Highway when a motor vehicle KCB 973X/ZD5045 FAW trailer rammed into a stationary vehicle registration number UBA 948S Toyota Hilux inwhich the officers were resting.
Faridah Nampiima, the Spokesperson Traffic Police has identified the deceased as Warrant officer Collins Manayanga and Private James Tumusime, both attached to Uganda Revenue Authority/ Customs Malaba.
She said that the officers had been deployed at the T-junction to divert empty trucks to Lwakhakha.
Charles Onyango, a witness and security guard at Heartland secondary school, near the junction where the accident happened said the Toyota Hilux double cabin was parked on the roadside when the container truck fell on the cabin killing the two officers instantly.
The district police commander, SP Rogers Chebeben confirmed the accident and said the truck driver was on the run.
He attributed the cause of the accident to reckless driving.
Investigation into the matter are ongoing.
