Makerere University guild election campaign has turned bloody after one of the students was killed in alleged stabbing on Thursday evening
The deceased is Bewatte Betungura, a law student at Uganda Christian University- UCU Kampala Campus in his second year.
According to reports, the deceased had gone to mobilise support for his long time friend, Justus Tukamushaba, the FDC candidate when a scuffle broken up between the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) guild camp and their rival, the National Unity Platform (NUP) camp
During the scuffle, an unknown person allegedly stabbed Betungura in the back with a sharp object injuries of which he succumbed to.
The UCU law society Kampala branch has confirmed to the blacksmiths reports of Betungura’s death describing him as a friendly brilliant and promising lawyer whose candle has been mercilessly blown off.
“It’s with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that we have learnt of the demise of our own Mr. Betungura Bewatte, a serving member on the Law Society’s sports committee and a student in LLB2 earlier this evening on 14th July, 2022, May the sould of the deceased rest in peace.” Read a condolence message by Dancan Kumbaine, speaker UCULS Kampala Campus.
According to Kumbaine, the vigil and funeral arrangements for the deceased will be communicated at a later time.
Police arrived at the scene of the crime and the deceased body has been conveyed to Mulago city mortuary for a postmortum.

Further reports indicate that Betungura will be laid to rest at his ancenstral home in Nyakizinga sub-county, Ruhinda South County Mitooma district at a date to be communicated.
Makerere University guild elections are scheduled to take place on Friday July 15 at the university grounds. A total of 16 candidates are competing for the university’s 88th Guild Presidential seat.
