The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has commissioned transformer upgrades in Matugga, Bombo and Kapeeka, fulfilling its commitment to improving service reliability for customers in these areas.

The upgrades aim to address three key issues: increasing electricity demand, transformer overloading, and low-voltage challenges that have affected households and businesses in these areas.

The completed works in Matugga include the installation of two new distribution transformers (100kVA and 50kVA) and the construction of medium and low voltage overhead power lines in Galozi Zone. In Kirowa village, the existing 25kVA single-phase transformer has been upgraded to a 50kVA three-phase unit. In addition, a second 25kVA transformer has been relocated to a more suitable load centre to ensure compliance with standard network requirements.

In Bombo, UEDCL has installed two 50kVA transformers and upgraded the existing medium and low voltage overhead power lines serving Wabitembe and Kabonge villages.

In Kapeeka, the Company has extended power supply to Mulama-Kitebere village, Makulubita Sub-county, following the installation of two 25kVA transformers and the construction of 2.9 km of 33kV and 4.5 km of low-voltage power lines. These improvements are expected to enhance supply reliability, improve voltage quality, and increase network capacity.

Speaking during the commissioning event in Matugga, Jenneth Anena Mwa, Senior Project Engineer, said the transformer upgrades are part of UEDCL’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the electricity distribution network and improve customer experience.

“This project is testament to our commitment to addressing network constraints and responding to the growing electricity needs of our customers.

The newly installed transformers will reduce the load on the existing overloaded units and enhance supply reliability in the communities we serve,” she said. Mwa also urged residents to safeguard electricity infrastructure and report any acts of vandalism that may affect service delivery.

“The community is the primary beneficiary of these investments. We appeal to residents to protect the infrastructure that has been put in place and promptly report any acts that may compromise the reliability of electricity supply,” she added.
