The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has challenged members of the 12th Parliament to prioritize service delivery and address the needs of ordinary Ugandans instead of advancing personal interests.
This comes as newly elected Members of Parliament begin their swearing-in ceremony, which started today and will run until Friday, 15th May 2026, ushering in the 2026–2031 term of office.
Speaking during the party’s weekly press conference at Uganda House in Kampala, the UPC spokesperson, Sharon Arach, expressed concern over the performance of previous parliaments.
Arach noted that from the 9th to the 11th Parliament, many legislators failed to effectively represent Ugandans, instead focusing on personal gains and serving the interests of a few individuals.

She cited controversial constitutional amendments, including the removal of presidential age limits and term limits, as examples where Parliament acted in its own interest rather than that of the citizens.
She emphasized that the new Parliament must reclaim its role as a people-centered institution by putting national interest above personal benefit and working to restore public confidence.
“Put the government to task to improve on the speed of sustainable service delivery at both central and local government,” Arach urged.
Meanwhile, Arach revealed that UPC is holding internal meetings to determine whether the party will front a candidate in the forthcoming Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament by-election.
She said a final decision will be communicated after consultations within party structures are concluded.
