The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has criticized what they termed as “high-handedness” used by police during an altercation with Bobi Wine supporters on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, police clashed with supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) who had formed a procession, bringing business to a standstill in Bulindo, a suburb of Kampala City. During the scuffle, NUP party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu was injured in the leg by an alleged tear gas canister.
Addressing journalists at their party headquarters, Sharon Oyat Arach, Spokesperson of UPC condemned the excessive force of police which appear to have returned to haunt opposition politicians as the country draws closer to the 2026 elections. She called professionalism while handling large crowds.
“Police should restrain itself from high-handedness while managing crowds,” Arach said. ” As we come closer to 2026 general elections, UPC reiterates its position that let all stakeholders (Electoral Commission, Security Agencies, Civil Society, Political Parties, Politicians and the public) ensure peace and safety of our people before, during and after elections.”
According to the UPC, police is mandated to keep law and order and protect people and their property contrary to what they are currently doing. The party also tasked police to thorough investigate the Bulindo incident and give a comprehensive report to the public.
