The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) will hold its National Council meeting on Saturday to discuss the party’s status, the party leadership announced.
The announcement was made by UPC president Jimmy Akena during a media engagement at the party headquarters in Kampala on Wednesday.
“Using the powers as the president of Uganda People’s Congress, I am going to be calling a National Council meeting this Saturday,” Akena said.
He said the meeting will also review the conduct of the recent elections and discuss the party’s response, as well as future plans and arrangements.
“We are going to be discussing the status of the Uganda People’s Congress. We are also going to be discussing the conduct of the last year elections and UPC’s response to that. I will also be presenting on UPC’s future engagement and the respective arrangements,” Akena said.
Akena said the meeting is being convened in line with the UPC Constitution, which allows the party president to call the National Council with a 48-hour notice.
“Under the UPC Constitution, I am entitled to call on the National Council, giving 48 hours notice. Saturday is more than 48 hours notice,” he said.
He added that official documentation for the meeting would be released later on Wednesday or early Thursday.
The UPC president said the meeting will be held virtually due to the Ebola outbreak in the country, but members will still have an opportunity to participate in discussions.
He urged party members with issues or concerns to submit them to the party headquarters at Uganda House in Kampala for consideration.
“Because of Ebola, the meeting is going to be online. But we will be able to have interactive processes. I also request those who have issues, concerns or matters which they feel are important to bring them directly to the headquarters,” Akena said.
