The Uganda Peoples Congress has called upon its party members and the public to actively engage in the process of updating the national voter register ahead of the 2026 elections.
Sharon Oyat Arach, the party spokesperson emphasized the importance of mobilizing all eligible persons to participate in the exercise to ensure that their particulars are accurately captured, to promote free and fair electoral processes. The party also reminded citizens of their civic duty to verify their registration status and encouraged first-time voters, especially the youth, to take advantage of the registration exercise to secure their voting rights.
“The youth who have, and are turning eighteen, should also register to vote for the coming elections,” she said.
Arach made the remarks on Wednesday during the party first press briefing for the year 2025, at their headquarters, Uganda House Kampala.
Additionally, UPC called upon the Independent Electoral Commission to intensify awareness campaigns and civic education about its electoral activities in all parts of the country.
UPC president Hon. Jimmy Akena previously announced that he would be running for the presidency in next year’s presidential race. Arach retaliated this, stating that they will field candidates at all elective political positions.
She revealed that the party is working on an internal program in preparation for the general elections which will be released soon.
The electoral commission kicked off the nationwide voter’s register update and verification exercise on Tuesday January 7, and it’s expected to close on January 10, 2025.
According to the EC, the registered voter’s names will be displayed on the notice boards of all polling stations to allow Ugandans to go and check their voter details to confirm their votability.
