Uganda People’s Congress has asked the government to increase allowances given to medical interns to enable them execute their duties effectively.
Health ministry on July 27 cleared deployment of over 1,900 medical interns to the 58 intern centres across the country with a net monthly allowance of Shs1m to each medical intern to help in and accomodations.
Sharon Oyat Arach, the UPC spokesperson however asserts that the allowances given to these intern doctors are so meager given the state of economy in the country and their workloads.
“The monthly allowance of 1 million shillings to medical interns is a drop in an ocean and out of touch with the reality as our prices of goods and services continue to rise day by day,” Arach said.
She noted that medic interns do a donkeys work in hospitals they are deployed than senior doctors who only give instructions calling for payments depending on the workload provided as this may help to bridge the gap between payments for both senior and junior doctors.

In addition, Arach tasked government to improve the working environment for the deployed interns and provide enough medicines and other equipments needed in hospitals to ensure effective and effecient service delivery.
“In any case, medical interns should work in a conducive environment that is well facilitated as they transform from theory to real practical work,” she noted.
