The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has intensified surveillance measures along the Uganda-Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) border in response to the escalating conflict in Eastern DRC. The fighting between armed groups and Congolese forces has led to a surge in refugees seeking safety in Uganda, posing a significant threat to border communities and regional security.
According to UPDF Public Information Officer 2nd Division infantry Maj.Kiconco Tabaro, over 2,000 Congolese refugees have crossed into Uganda through porous border points in Kisoro and Kanungu districts in the last 72 hours. The refugees, mostly from areas near the border, have been relocated to transit centers in Nyakabande and Matanda.
The UPDF has assured that the security situation on the Ugandan side remains calm, with no incursions reported. However, the military has stepped up vigilance to prevent possible infiltration by negative elements, including the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), which has been attempting to re-enter Uganda after their camps were destroyed in Eastern DRC.
The Office of the Prime Minister is working closely with stakeholders to ensure that fleeing Congolese civilians are handled in accordance with international law. The UPDF has also received 98 armed Congolese police officers, who are being processed according to international guidelines.
Maj.Tabaro has urged community leaders and civilians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to prevent cross-border insecurity. “The UPDF is working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of both Ugandan citizens and refugees” added Tabaro.
