The Victoria University community is mourning the loss of Dr. Martin Jerome Okec Aliker, who passed away at the age of 95. Dr. Aliker served as the first Chancellor of the university from 2013 to 2019 and played a pivotal role in shaping the institution into what it is today.
A man of many talents, Dr. Aliker was not only a renowned dental surgeon and successful businessman but also a respected statesman who had a significant impact on Uganda’s political landscape. Throughout his life, he worked tirelessly to contribute to the growth and development of the country.
Lawrence Muganga, the Vice Chancellor of Victoria University, spoke highly of Dr. Aliker’s dedication and trustworthiness during his tenure as Chancellor. He emphasized the immense loss that the university and the community will feel with his passing.
Dr. Aliker’s early life was marked by a commitment to excellence, starting with his education at King’s College Budo and later at Makerere University. He furthered his studies in the United States, where he earned degrees in Political Science and Dental Surgery.
In his autobiography, ‘The Bell is Ringing: Martin Aliker Story,’ Dr. Aliker chronicled his personal journey of perseverance and triumph amidst challenges. His story encapsulates not only his professional achievements but also his personal experiences, including falling in love and navigating cultural differences.
