ASP Luke Owoyesigiire, the Deputy Spokesman Kampala Metropolitan Police said 8 dead bodies have been recovered and three rescued. However, he noted that one of the 3 rescued persons died moments after arriving at Mulago hospital.

Two of the deceased include an 18yr old boy identified as Juma Bukenya who has been working as a porter and another identified as Isaac Keba,23yrs, also a porter.

Residents in Lukuli said thatthe incident happened last night at around midnight when they has “an exploding bomb – like sound” of people screaming but could not immediately realise it was a collapsing building.

Other reports indicate that Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) through the Physical Planning Department had earlier in March stopped construction activities at this site.Parrotsug.com

Mr Douglas NSUBUGA, the Physical Planner at Makindye Division said despite directives to stop the construction works as review of the documentation is pending, the developer Abraham Kamanzi took advantage of the corona virus situation to continue with the construction works.

Its alleged that over 15 – 20 workers were working on this site where they have been staying at night following the presidential directives on covid-19 requiring construction workers to camp at sites or walk, cycle from home in order to contain the spread of the virus.

The Police Fire and Rescue team said other more people may still be trapped in the building rubbles as the exact number of the workers who were at the site by the time of an incidence remains unknown.
