Her Highness Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, the Queen of Buganda kingdom has asked the Kabaka`s subjects to plant trees on every cultural ceremonies if they are to promote, protect and conserve the environment.

Nnabagereka believes that conserving the environment will mitigate climate change  and this can only be achieved if all subjects embraced tree planting on cultural ceremonies like Kwanjula, funerals, among others.

She made the remarks on Friday March18, 2022, at the celebration of Buganda Kingdom Women’s Day 2O22, at Bulange Gardens in mengo.

Nnabagereka’s call to plant trees on every cultural ceremonies follow a recent call in the neighbouring Kingdom of Busoga suggesting that trees be paid as bride price.

Thomas Matende, the Namutumba Resident District Commissioner- RDC recently suggested to the Kyabazingaship of Busoga to enact an ordinance requiring the groom to pay trees as bride price to the bride’s family one way of promoting environmental conservation in the Kingdom.

“As a tradition, trees must be a requirement before couple take their marriage vows and the by-law, if passed will see more trees planted in Busoga,” RDC Matende said on the celebration of water and environment week.

This year’s Buganda Kingdom Women’s Day celebration was organised under the theme: “Omukyala N’obutonde bwensi” – Women And Environment.

During the celebration, the Kingdom’s Queen decried the continued depletion of the environment resulting into landslides and floods leaving crops, animals, lives destroyed and other people homeless.

She noted that Buganda is increasingly feeling climate change effects urging every woman to start at her home by planting trees (fruits) to save the environment since their day to day activities such as cultivation, cooking, chopping firewood and collecting water to mention but a few rely on environment.

She further challenged Women to teach their children how to save environment something that will help them growing up to value protecting of environment.

Speaking at the function, Joyce Nabossa Ssebugwawo, the Minister of State for Information, Communications and Technology urged women to Conserve environment by using lesser and cleaner energy consuming sources such as bioenergy, hydro power as well as frequent planting of trees.
