Prof. Mpezamihiigo said on Saturday (June 11) that they were going to consider all students whose names are not in the booklet but were supposed to graduate.

“You’re going to be considered by the teams list and there’s no need for you to worry. The offices will be here to handle because I saw you panicking”, urged Prof Mpezamihiigo

This came after several students from different colleges at both the Western Campus in Isjaka and the Main Campus Kansamga camped at the University’s academic vice chancellor’s office on Saturday morning demanding for explanations over missing names in the final graduation booklet.

Students claimed that the University first released a seriest of draft graduation lists and their names were missing and they reported the errors to their respective departments and the academic affair office and were assured of the corrections that they will appear in the graduation booklet.

After releasing a series of draft graduation lists to students and ensuring that all errors are corrected, a final copy of the graduation booklet is printed as the final confirmation of successful students. However, graduands who had come with their parents for a graduation ceremony that was held yesterday were disappointed on learning that their names were missing in the graduation booklet.

They argued that they had passed their exams and cleared all the university dues but to their dismay, their names were deliberately left out of the graduation list and the final graduation booklet.

However, in his remarks during the University’s 25th graduation ceremony, Prof Mouhamad Mpezamihiigo urged them not to despair noting that those eligible to graduate had been audited and verified to get their academic transcripts

“Everybody has been audited and verified, whoever is due to get their academic documents will get them. So, I have said.” VC said

Missing names on graduation lists is still a challenge affecting almost all university’s in Uganda and many student, parents and guardians have found it difficult at the time of graduations.

Last month, over 2,000 students at Makerere University reportedly missed on graduating at the University’s 72nd graduation ceremony after their names were missing in the official graduation booklet

The university Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe however told reports that the university was going to identify the eligible students award them their certificates and transcripts and graduate them in the next graduation ceremony.

We are investigating and I think within two weeks we should have identified if indeed there were some students who were genuinely left out on the graduation booklet and we do the needful but what is important for the students who may have genuinely been left out is that they should not despair,” he said.

“They will be given their transcripts and then graduate at the next graduation ceremony as just a formality. We hope the next graduation ceremony will be in February (2023) because we are going to go back to our normal schedule,” he stated.

KIU on Saturday (June 11) graduated a total of 2,394 graduands among whom included six (6) PhDs in management science i.e. in Business management, management information system, public management and PhD in microbiology.

A total of 1035 females constituting to 43 per cent and 1359 males constituting to 57 per cent graduated at the University’s 25th graduation ceremony.

“Today we are graduating 2,394, out of which 43% (1035) are females, and 57% (1359) are males. In terms of the quota contribution between main and western Campus, 52% (1240) have trained at the main campus, while 48% are from the Western Campus,” said Vice Chancellor Prof Mpezamihiigo

19 graduands received exceptional certificates for having passed highly and were awarded First Class Degree Honors among whom were 7 female graduands and 12 male graduants.

Prof. Mondo Kagonyera officiated the graduation ceremony. He commended Kampala International University for standing out of the odds during the COVID-19 pandemic and worked hard to ensure continuity of the university activities using digital means like E-learning systems and virtual gradations urging other universities to benchmark on KIU and take lessons good for them.

The veteran politician and academician asked graduands to preserve ethical values of honesty, trust and moral integrity if they were to diligently serve society.

He also warned against misuse of modern technologies by youth graduates something he said may ruin their future.

“Alot has come to surface in this era of disruptive technologies, thus you must be careful not to misuse the knowledge you acquired for there will be consequences for that misuse,” he warned

Among other notable dignitaries were ministers, MPs, representatives of other universities, ED NCHE Prof Mary J.N Okwakol among others.
