A total of 125 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) and the elderly in Sheema district have received assistive devices to aid in their mobilities and performing other tasks.

The mobility aid devices which include wheelchairs, walking sticks among others have been donated by the Sheema municipality MP, Dickson C Kateshumbwa as part of his strategy to support special interests groups in his constituency.

The donation ceremony took place on Friday July 22, at Kabwohe playgrounds in Sheema municipality Sheema district.

According to Kateshumbwa, the the donation is a lobby for his constituents from partners at The Fathers Heart Ministries in New York and Sheema Development Foundation.

“125 PWDs from across Sheema District were given Wheel Chairs.I thank our partners @Fathers_Heart and colleague Sheema MPs for working together to deliver this. Special appreciation to my friend Hon. Grace Hellen Asamo Minister @Mglsd_UG @Nyakikongoro_R @SDF_Sheema @laurakanushu2,” Kateshumbwa said

Speaking at the ceremony, the Sheema Municipal Council speaker Hon. Steven Katwiromunda, who also doubles as the political assistant of MP Kateshumbwa urged parents, guardians and caretakers to the people living with disabilities and old people not to discriminate them but to instead create interventions and address their issues.

Katwiromunda was representing the honourable at the ceremony where he challenged people with special to fully engage in government programs like the current parish development model where they will benefit with over 10 percent of money under the program.

Some of the wheelchairs that Hon. Kateshumbwa lobbied and donated to the persons living with disabilities in Sheema municipality

Hon.Tumwijukye Colleb, a councilor for the PWDs and chairperson social services Sheema Municipality expressed displeasures saying that people with disabilities are taken to be a curse to the society which is not the case.

The beneficiaries of this donation hailed Kateshumbwa of prioritising and considering PWDs as useful members of the society urging that the wheelchairs and walking sticks will ease their transport and aid them to perform other tasks

The PWDs however asked government and other stakeholders to offer more intervention especially in implementing laws that will enable PWDs to fully exercise and enjoy their rights.
